United Way of the EUP Offers Free Tax Preparation Through VITA Program

Tax season is here! The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is once again available through the United Way of the Eastern Upper Peninsula, offering free, high-quality tax preparation services to local households earning less than $64,000 per year.

A key component of our local VITA program is the incredible partnership with the Lake Superior State University Lukenda School of Business. Business students receive hands-on, real-world experience preparing tax returns while serving their community. These students complete extensive IRS training and certification, gaining valuable professional skills while providing an essential service to local families. We would not be able to operate this program at its current capacity without the dedication of these students and the leadership and support of LSSU Business faculty and staff. Their collaboration strengthens both our workforce and our community.

For many families, tax refunds represent the largest financial boost of the year. Access to free tax preparation keeps hundreds of dollars in the pockets of local households—money that can be used for groceries, childcare, utilities, transportation, debt reduction, or savings. By removing preparation fees, VITA helps strengthen financial stability across the Eastern Upper Peninsula.

Appointments are available now through Thursday, April 9th. Community members are encouraged to call the United Way of the EUP office at 906-632-3700 to schedule an appointment. Early scheduling is recommended as spots fill quickly each year. This program is available to community members in all 3 counties (Chippewa, Mackinac, & Luce counties), but appointments are in Sault Ste. Marie.

The VITA program is one example of how United Way of the Eastern Upper Peninsula serves as a system-builder—identifying community needs and mobilizing volunteers, partners, and resources to meet them. Programs like VITA are made possible through local donations, workplace payroll campaigns, and community support. When you give to United Way, you help sustain vital services that strengthen families and improve financial resilience across the Eastern Upper Peninsula.

To learn more about supporting this work or to start a payroll campaign at your workplace, contact the United Way office at 906-632-3700. Together, we can continue building strong systems that ensure every neighbor has access to the resources they need to thrive.
